All it takes is a decision.
My friend Robin was working in the marketing division of a large company. She created her company's first blog, and wrote lots of web content. When the marketing department's budget was cut, eliminating many jobs, Robin decided that rather than attempt job hunting, she'd sell her writing services. Within a couple of months she was making more money than she'd made in her day job, and she found that she liked being her own boss.
Once you've made the decision to sell your writing services, here's what to do next.
1. Decide What You'll Sell
Start by deciding what you'll sell. Choose an area in which you enjoy writing.
Robin started by offering blogging and web content writing services.
Many years ago, I started out by selling copywriting services. I was writing romance novels, and copywriting for a business I was running. I loved writing copy -- I still do.
2. Create Samples to Show What You Can Do
Chances are you already have some material you can use a samples. If you don't then getting them is your first priority. Please don't rush this: samples are vital.
3. Get Your First Client, and a Testimonial
Once you've got samples, get a client. Clients are everywhere. Use your contacts, or use Twitter. Or, use one of the outsourcing sites.
Consider your first ten clients as simply a foundation -- something you can build on. All you want from them is a testimonial.
4. Promote Your Business
Now you're off and running, you'll soon discover that marketing is an essential part of your business. If you're hunting for writing jobs, you're not running a business, you're just serially employed.
In the beginning, you WILL have to hunt for clients, but your aim must be to have clients coming to you as soon as possible.
5. Keep Learning: No-One Stands Still
There's a saying: if you're not growing, you're dying. This is true. Nothing stays the same.
You must keep learning and growing. If you don't, one day you'll wake up and realize that the carnival has moved on without you.
The newspaper industry is learning that, right now. They've had fifteen years to face up to the reality of the Internet and what it would do to their business. They refused to grow and experiment.
Many journalists saw the writing on the wall (on the web, in this case:-)) and jumped ship before they were thrown overboard. Others refuse to see, and they'll go down with the ship.
So PLEASE keep learning. I make time every day to study, and so should you. It doesn't matter much what you study, as long as you don't become complacent. Keep trying new things, and your professional writing services business will bloom.
