I've been writing this blog since 2004... Eek! So many years, so many words... :-)
Since it's been so long, there's stuff I've forgotten, and that I'm sure you've never read. So over the next few months, let's scrabble around in this blog's attic to see what we can find.
Here's one from 2004, in which I quoted from Ambrose Bierce's Write It Right: A Little Blacklist of Literary Faults.
Angela Booth's Writing Blog: Writer's delight: Write It Right:
"_Got Married_ for _Married_. If this is correct we should say, also, "got dead" for died; one expression is as good as the other."
(You can download Ambrose Bierce's Write It Right: A Little Blacklist of Literary Faults completely free from Project Gutenberg.)
If you love language, this book, first published 103 years ago, gives you plenty to think about.
Consider these common mis-uses:
_Healthy_ for _Wholesome_. "A healthy climate." "A healthy occupation." Only a living thing can be healthy.
_Each Other_ for _One Another_. "The three looked at each other." That is, each looked at the other. But there were more than one other; so we should say they looked at one another, which means that each looked at another. Of two, say each other; of more than two, one another.
