Penguin’s senior fiction editor Lindsey Heaven adds: ‘Fan fiction and self-published writing sites have provided a very direct and instant way for us to discover new voices quickly, and that’s really exciting. As a trend, it may dominate the publishing news headlines for some time to come.’

I admit it. I don't understand how writers can write fan fiction.
As much as I might love a world someone has created, or their characters, others' material never sparks my inspiration.
Nor can I read fan fiction. The idea makes me shudder. I LOVE Jane Austen, but I would never read Jane Austen fan fiction. I don't want to read anyone else's interpretation of Austen; I want the original.
Different strokes, of course. (And no E.L. James pun intended, either... :-))
