That said, I think there's a reason the vast majority of titles don't even sell 500 copies (or 100): They're of poor quality. Of those titles that are of reasonable quality, often the authors don't have copywriting skills or basic online marketing skills (or even a passable website) to get it noticed.

Self-publishing is a business model. It's not a magic bullet, as I'm fond of saying on my Just Write a Book Blog.
If you decide to self-publish, please realize that you need to get up to speed on the model, and do your best by your book. Many writers can't do this, for any number of reasons.
That's perfectly fine. You don't need to self-publish. Hold your head high, and go the traditional publishing route.
