Turn Your Words Into Gold: Write and Sell An Ebook In Just Eight Hours
Here's what I love about writing ebooks: you write them once, and they keep on selling forever.
I know several writers who've taken to the Kindle platform like the proverbial ducks to water. One writer friend turns out a new Kindle ebook every month, like clockwork. The last time we spoke, she had 11 ebooks selling -- and her income is rising month by month.
Another writer friend mixes writing her own ebooks, with writing ebooks for others. Currently she's been commissioned to write a biography, and a family history, for the same client. She's finding it huge fun, and she's making more money than she's ever made.
The benefit of writing and selling ebooks is that once written, they can keep on selling forever. Would you trade eight hours for an income stream?
Become a Web writing pro: double and triple your hourly rate
Whatever your current income from your writing, you can make more, much more. But first you need to know what's possible, and you need to be aware that the easy advertised writing "opportunities" are quicksand.
In my new Writing For The Web: Make Money Today program, I discuss what pays the most in Web writing, and what pays YOU the most. I explain why, if you're charging just $40 an hour, you're not making enough to survive.
Discover why writing for the Web is the best thing that's ever happened to me... and to you.
Practice every opportunity you get — it’s all practice
Writing is a muscle. Just as with every other muscle, to strengthen it you need to practice.
At times, getting the words out is hard, even for professional writers. Only practice makes writing easier. If you need to write for your job, set aside 25 minutes every day, just to write.
Writers know that writing can be fixed. Stop trying to write well. Write anything… just get something down.
Goodreads will be purchased by Random House & Penguin. Goodreads is one of the fastest growing reader communities on the internet. Pearson bought Author Solutions in July of 2012 and buying Goodreads, a reader community would make sense as more publishers are trying to sell direct to consumer. Goodreads has a store like function even though it is rarely used. (Only DRM free books can be sold through Goodreads). There is a lot of data that could be mined from the Goodreads backend.
Dear Author has some fascinating predictions for what will happen in publishing in 2013.
When I saw the Goodreads prediction, I was shocked. However, I think it's accurate. Goodreads is a brilliant site, and ripe for purchase by a publishing behemoth.
The first thing I did was set a new rule for how I consume content. My rule is to never read online. Of course, I still need to read things I find on the Web, I’ve just time-shifted how I do it.
I signed up for Pocket and installed their browser extension. When clicked, Pocket scrubs the text of what I’d like to read and saves it for later. I made sure the Pocket button is conspicuously visible on my web browser to act as a reminder of my “never read online” rule.
In Scrivener it’s possible to write in one format and publish in a totally different one without changing the on-screen appearance of a single character. So when you decide you want to change publication formats…say you’ve imported a Word manuscript and published it to Kindle, but now you want to re-format it for CreateSpace…you simply create a new set of formatting instructions using an intuitive compilation wizard, and Scrivener does the line-by-line format conversion for you.
When I researched this blog post I discovered some claim writing longhand can do everything from staving off debilitating diseases to increasing the intellect. (See: How Handwriting Trains the Brain.) Make of that what you will.

I’ve had several questions this week about finding writing jobs. These kinds of questions frustrate me, because I need a lot more information than the writers give me. I give these writers the simplest, most powerful way to find writing jobs that any writer can use.
This week, we’re looking at finding GREAT writing jobs… The BEST jobs ever. Keep this in mind: it’s who knows you. Therefore, your aim is to get known by as many people as possible.
Content writers have it tough these days. There’s so much content. How do you get read? You get read by “selling” your stories, and getting free Web page advertising from Google and the other search engines.
As writers, we’re creatives. We’re not wonderful at making the most of our skills. This is a shame, because we fail to use some very simple strategies to increase our income. One of the simplest is: upselling.
You can't do goals, you can only do tasks, so create a list of tasks which will take you to your goal. You may not know exactly what your tasks should be, but as long as you can think of ONE task, you can start working toward achieving your goal.
For example, perhaps you want to write a book. Writing a book is a huge project. Let's say that you set a deadline of one year for the project's completion. Now all you need to do is to create some tasks. Your first task could be: write an outline.
Write 200 words. This description clarifies the project in your own mind. Once it's on paper (or on the computer screen), you'll have a much clearer idea of what you need to do, and when. You'll find that just knowing this goes a long way toward eliminating procrastination.
“Once I saw how well my self-publishing books were doing and how much more attention and focus I could put on my own books, it was a pretty easy decision [to continue self-publishing] because those books have been doing so much better,” she said.
Freethy said that she prefers self-publishing because she has more control and power over her own product. She can also publish her work more frequently.
It became impossible to ignore the disruptive changes when the narrative industry began to migrate away from print. The narrative industry produces stories delivered as written words. This encompasses more than just fiction, including a wide swath of non-fiction as well. Any book that is intended to be read for enjoyment from start to finish and is primarily non-graphical is a product of the narrative industry. The narrative industry is moving inexorably away from print to ebooks.
Unlike a word processor that only allows you to create one document for each piece of writing—and forces you to write linearly—Scrivener can hold multiple documents within a project. Each document can be a scene, section, chapter, blog post, magazine article, or journal entry. The documents are easy to move, categorize, search, save versions of, and edit.
As you may have already heard, one thank-you gift we sent this year's Top Writers was a book with some of the best writing on Quora from 2010 through 2012. Over a hundred answers and four hundred pages of the best answers across 18 different categories.
As the welcome packages are beginning to hit doorsteps this week, we are happy to make the book available to everyone via PDF.
Team Up's early this year. I hadn't intended to run it until later, but I've had so many requests that I've given in. It's always fun for me, as it is for you.
What's "Team Up"? It's a way to get on track, and on the way to achieving your writing dreams. I learned in 2010 that "one small thing" (it's always small) can make a huge difference.
