Pen names: should you use a pen name?
Writers often ask me about pen names. Usually, I advise the writer to stick to his own name. It’s hard enough to brand one name, without needing to worry about other names.
That said, sometimes you need a pen name or three, because you’re targeting a specific audience, or you don’t want to use your own name, or another pen name, for a specific type of book. You want to develop a specific kind of personality (persona) for that kind of book.
Example: you’re male, and you’re writing romance. You don’t want to startle readers by using your own name. You also don’t want your fishing buddies to know that you’re writing romances.
