I'm always amused by the "Yes, but___" attitude that's prevalent among unsuccessful writers when you discuss marketing with them. Here's an excellent relevant post on the Cold Calling Blog, It Won't Work For Me:
There's nothing more frustrating than people who buy my books, then decide it won't work for them.
If you're convinced that normal marketing practices WON'T help you to sell your articles or books, or get copywriting gigs for you, it's because you've never tried.
Give marketing an honest try. Send out 200 magazine article queries, or book proposals, or make 500 cold calls to prospective copywriting clients. (For extra credit, do all three.)
You'll be snowed under with work. It will work for you. If you do the marketing work.
There are no secrets to marketing. Just (please) do it.
