Note: This writing technique comes from Tristine Rainer's wonderful book, The New Diary. I urge you to buy this book, or borrow it from your library, if you're having problems with getting your words to flow.
I've been blocked at various times in my writing career, so I know what it's like. My blocks occurred when I had too many other things going on in my life, and I just couldn't find a peaceful spot in myself, or when I was trying to write something I didn't want to write, but had signed a contract so I couldn't get out of it.
Writing a diary will help, and dialoguing with your block in your diary may just be enough to shift the block.
Dialoguing with your block is fun. It can also be disconcerting, when your block develops a real personality. This happens because we personalize aspects of ourselves. Read Carl Jung's work on archetypes for more on this.
To begin the dialogue, ask your block a question, any question at all. Then reply from the point of view of your block. When you can get your block to "speak" to you, it's often enough to break the block - it may even start you off on a totally new writing career. Remember to WRITE the questions and answers - it's a sneaky way to get yourself to write. :-)
