Do you have writer's block? This syndrome is crippling for a writer's income; it may even cause you to give up writing completely. Here are several strategies which will help.
Before we start, ask yourself what could be causing your writer's block. If you're undergoing a severe stress (someone close to you has lost their job, or has died, for example), just give yourself time to recover.
If you're not under severe stress, and have no idea what's causing your block, the strategies in this article will give you relief. By the way: WHY you're suffering writer's block is immaterial. You don't need to know why, just follow these strategies to start writing again.
1. Decide What You Want to Write: then Leave It
Writers often block when they're trying to start or complete a major project like a book. If this is the case, take some time off writing that project -- at least a week.
In the meantime, write something fun.
2. Ask Yourself What Would Be Fun to Write
What would be fun for you to write? Perhaps you've always want to try writing a screenplay, or a biography of someone. Or perhaps you want to write a series of essays. Choose something you'd enjoy, and start writing that.
You'll find that as you write, writing becomes fun again. You should find that after a few days of just having fun, you can start work on the project on which you're blocked again.
3. Write Yourself a Letter About Your Writer's Block
Subconsciously, you know what's causing your block. Write yourself a letter about your writer's block. You may find that the reason for your block comes out in the letter. Perhaps it's something trivial: you're angry because you haven't been promoted, or someone made you a promise and didn't keep it.
Anger at someone or something often causes writer's block. If this is the case, becoming conscious of what's troubling you is often enough to release the block.
4. Write About Your Greatest Enemy when You Were Eight Years Old
Other blocks have their genesis in your childhood, in an incident you've completely forgotten.
Write about the greatest enemy of your childhood. The enemy may be a person, or an activity, or a place. It's helpful to write about this in the third person: "When John was a small boy with red hair and freckles, and just eight years old, his greatest enemy was_______"
5. Your Three Wishes: What Are They?
If you could have three wishes, and be sure that they'd be granted by some omnipotent force, what would they be? Write down your three wishes.
As we get older, we can lose the capacity to allow magic into our lives. Our life, and our writing, becomes hard work, instead of fun. Writing down your three wishes can be powerful in connecting you with the source of your creativity.
Writer's block always has a message for you. The strategies in that article will help you to overcome your block, decode the message, and start writing again.
